A loser of a crook and his wife strike it rich when a botched bank job's cover business becomes a spectacular success.

In the hustle and bustle of s Coney Island, where the buzzing crowd comes and goes trudging slowly over the wooden boardwalks, silent stories of the everyday toilers who give life to the attraction unfold.

Somewhere in a clam bar, there's the sad waitress Ginny, a one-time actress and now a suffering wife who's been given a second chance by the side of the well-intentioned but uncouth carousel operator, Humpty.

On the other hand, there's Humpty's year-old estranged daughter, Carolina, who left the familial nest and a preordained future seeking adventure as a mobster's wife; only to return home with her wings broken, begging for forgiveness.

And from the lifeguard's high tower, where all is in plain sight, the young and charming lifesaver and hopeful playwright, Mickey, is the inadvertent but potent catalyst that binds everything together.

Shattered dreams, reckless love and betrayal, all under the bright lights of Coney Island. Written by Nick Riganas.

These days, even the college-educated don't recognize the classics. Instead, they complain that he is slandering Chicago.

Well, no doubt, that's what the municipal authorities said about Aristophanes at the time. In this movie, Juno Temple flees from her mobster husband to take refuge with her alcoholic father, James Belushi, and step-mother, Kate Winslett and her pyromaniac son from her first marriage; they've got marginal jobs.

The story is told from the viewpoint of Justin Timberlake, who spent the war in the navy. Now he's a lifeguard, studying to be a playwright, conducting an affair with Miss Winslett and falling in love with Miss Temple.

However, Mr. Allen has set it in the neighborhood he grew up in and made the fact that they're so broke they're living in a bankrupt freak show house an important plot point, so this will either be overlooked or seen as blasphemy.

This is one of Mr. Allen's serious movies. I join the general population in not being as fond of those as the ones that make me laugh out loud.

Yet I take a good deal of pleasure in his recreation of s Coney Island although his "Greenwich Village hovel" is remarkably clean for the era and his clear-eyed vision of a world, now vanished, that existed more surely than the one I live in now sometimes seems to.

Having grown up in Brooklyn and Coney Island having been an important part of my childhood, I was looking forward to this. Not good at all.

Cheesy lines, everything about it just felt like I was watching a bad theater play. I really like the all star cast, well I normally like every one of them.

Honestly I don't understand what lured them to this project though. It just didn't make any sense to me. Mostly the ending..

Lots of cringe worthy moments. I was left with the feeling of what's the point? Seriously, can someone please tell me what was the point of this movie and why did I let it waste my precious time?

One positive, it was visually appealing with the lighting. Once again we have an aging beauty at the end of her rope, desperate to hold onto her looks, conscious of being broke and, in this case, devastated at being passed over for her younger stepdaughter.

There's something quietly sadistic in the way Woody Allen depicts these "desperate women" whom the viewer is invited to gawk at as if they're carnival freaks.

Predictably, she is betrayed. I gave the film three stars because it's never boring, in the way "The Young and the Restless" and other soap operas were never boring.

The dialogue is so bad at times that it's actually funny and that also keeps you entertained. Jim Belushi is a blue-collar stereotype who yells "Christ!

Ginny and Humpty were both so narcissistic and self-dramatizing that they sounded like a drama queen's Facebook posts.

When Allen was younger, his view of women apparently was more charitable and so a neurotic female character was portrayed as charmingly "quirky" like Annie Hall rather than crazy.

Now, after Mia Farrow, it seems any woman who dares express rage toward a man who rejects her in favor of a younger woman understandably automatically gets portrayed as "crazy".

In short, nothing original here, just a very simple love triangle that, if a woman had made it, would be written off as pure soap opera.

But since Woody Allen made it, it gets compared to "Streetcar Named Desire" and other male-authored tragedies that supposedly sympathize with weak women, but often ends up subliminally celebrating their distress.

I didn't know this was a Woody Allen flick until I read the reviews. I am not a fan. Then i was just curious to see if others thought it was as horrible as I did, and it turns out they do!

It was a bunch of weird scenes with bad clothing and, overtalking, a lot of screaming and over acting and monologues that went on far too long especially from Kate W.

Geoffrey Macnab. This is one of [Woody Allen's] poorest writing efforts in recent memory, as each piece of dialogue comes off as half baked, stagey, and pedantic.

Allen Almachar. Allen has made it as a period drama and, although it is beautiful due to the colorful frames of the light master, Vittorio Storaro, the solutions he proposes for the idyllic tangles of the characters seem insubstantial to me.

Yasser Medina. David Lamble. Sure, the cinematography by the great Vittorio Storaro is sublime Steven Prokopy.

It's a pleasant little chunk of Allen's brand sure to lightly please fans and maybe a few others. Dan Scully.

Had Allen tried something akin to Godard's King Lear with this story, viewers might get more from Wonder Wheel than a gorgeous visual palette with an empty center.

WONDER WHEEL tells the story of four characters whose lives intertwine amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the s: Ginny Kate Winslet , an emotionally volatile former actress now working as a waitress in a clam house; Humpty Jim Belushi , Ginny's rough-hewn carousel operator husband; Mickey Justin Timberlake , a handsome young lifeguard who dreams of becoming a playwright; and Carolina Juno Temple , Humpty's long-estranged daughter, who is now hiding out from gangsters at her father's apartment.

Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro captures a tale of passion, violence, and betrayal that plays out against the picturesque tableau of s Coney Island.
